Happy Spring!

Hello Fiberlovers!

Spring will be here soon….right? RIGHT?? You wouldn’t know we are already passed the solstice. Oh well, it is what it is and we have to make the most of it. Personally: I finished the Blue Kimono and delivered it to my very happy recipient. It was, without exception, the most pleasant thing I have ever knitted. The yarn was right (alpaca) and the color was lovely (sky blue), and I had Peggy at my side to help me out of a few problems, AND she did the finishing. She makes such beautiful seams in all the finishing she does. My current project is to finished the cardigan I’m knitting with Universal’s Shades. Gorgeous Colors!

Our week at JC Campbell was marvelous, small class of six but they were dedicated to learning the technique of silk painting. I have a class coming up, so if you’ve ever wanted to learn the joy of color into silk, give us a call for time and date, and sign up. It will probably be the 14th or 28th.

We have received our BIG order from Cascade and these yarns are spectacular. The new yarns are jumping off the shelf, and lots of the more ‘seasoned’ ones are selling at 30% off. Our little sales corner is FULL, come see if you can find something that would be just what you need, for a price that will surprise you. Speaking of sales, our hand dyed garments (t shirts, dresses, baby socks, etc) as well as knitted garments and scarves, are all discounted at 25%. This does not apply to silk scarves.

We have a table of yarns ready to be dyed, if we can just get a warm day without all this wind. I’m hoping it will be this week as “sunny and warm” are some words that the weather people are throwing about.

FYI: The Yarn Crawl will be held Thursday May 8 through Sunday May 11. At this point in time, we are 11 shops participating in this ‘crawl’ and it covers at least 5 counties, maybe more. We will have baskets of yarn for lucky raffle winners and a large prize at the end of the ‘crawl’. We will keep you informed.

We have patterns galore, in fact a full room of them, with chairs and tables. Come spend some time looking through the patterns and get inspired. Find something new to knit; we are happy to help you find the right yarn for a new project, and perhaps you can find some hand dyed yarn that will be perfect. New yarns are arriving each day…come see the latest. We also have a sweater program that can print out a sweater pattern using your measurements and desires.

You will now find vintage Japanese fabrics that can be purchased in amounts from very small to full kimono lengths. In addition, we have kimono and obi that can be purchased whole. These garments are high quality. If you have an interest in Japanese kimono and obi fabrics, we just might have what you are looking for.

Don’t forget, our sale room is marked down to 30% ALWAYS…good bargains there!

See below for class times and dates.

February News Letter

Hello Fiberlovers!

SO MUCH YARN! Our first orders of the year just came in this week and we have been very busy getting them processed and on the shelf for you. We have yarns from Berroco, Universal Yarns, Plymouth, and an order from Cascade will ship next month. The colors are so exciting, and the make up of the yarns is lovely. These are the NEW yarns and you can click on the distributor links below and check them out.

Cascade: Pure Alpaca is in – the larger order will ship mid March.

Plymouth: Revel, Encore DK

Universal Yarns: more Deluxe Worsted, more Classic Shades and Classic Shades w/sequins, Classic Shades Big Time, and Uptown Worsted.

Berroco: Berroco Sox, Boboli Lace, Floret, Folio,Fuji, Kodiak, Maya, Remix, Ultra Alpaca Light, and Vintage.

Lantern Moon: Double point needles in sizes 1 2 & 3. These are the DP needles that everyone loves to use for socks. The ones we ordered are ‘Feather Light’, and would become the favorite of all DP needle lovers.

In need of more shelf space, we have STUFFED our SALE ROOM; all yarns in that space are 30% off.

You can always reach our distributors through the links we show below. Have some fun and look up a few of these new yarns, although to really see AND FEEL how interesting these yarns are, you’ll just have to come in the shop.

The kimono has half a sleeve (I’m not a fast knitter, and have to grab my knitting time as I can). I can’t say enough about the Cascade Pure Alpaca. It is heavenly in your hands and makes a lovely fabric. It has become one of my favorites. I’m knitting this garment on a needle size US5, and it would seem to me to be the perfect gauge for this Alpaca.

We will be at Campbell School, teaching silk painting the first week of March; if you are interested or know someone who is, call Campbell School at 800-365-5724 and ask if there are any openings in the class. You’ll never see things the same way after you learn silk painting…it’s magical!

We are getting quite low on our hand painted yarns, as it has been WAY TOO COLD to go out on the deck and dye yarn. The pots are all frozen and it’s too cold to even empty them. We will order yarn to dye the second week of March, after we return from Campbell. I can hardly wait to dye yarn as new combinations of colors are dancing in my head.

Have you seen our NEW TOY? Rita has brought her loom boards in for all of you who would love to weave small projects, but do not want the expense or intense time it takes to set up a big loom. A great gift for anyone – kids and adults will thoroughly enjoy this loom board. Peg wove a gorgeous bag that could be an evening bag, it’s so pretty. She will be happy to show you how to set up the board and begin weaving right away; just think of what you can do with all those tiny yarn scraps. The loom board sells for $12.

We have patterns galore, in fact a full room of them, with chairs and tables. Come spend some time looking through the patterns and get inspired. Find something new to knit; we are happy to help you find the right yarn for a new project, and perhaps you can find some hand dyed yarn that will be perfect. Happy Holidays!

Hello Fiberlovers!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! We are sending the January newsletter a little early because we are doing something we haven’t done before. We are offering a 25% discount on all hand dyed and hand painted silks! This sale is only until Dec 31, so think SILK when you are wondering where to find the right gift, at the last minute, and at the best price.

Don’t forget, all our manufactured yarns are 20% off til the end of December. It’s a good time to stock up for your Winter knitting.

The kimono is coming along nicely – back is finished and I’m working on the two front panels. I’m enjoying very much knitting with the Cascade Pure Alpaca. It is so soft and lovely, I might knit something else with it when I finish the kimono. The multi colored short kimono that I’m knitting with Universal’s Shades is also coming along well. I’m at the point where I knit the other sleeve so I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

We are well-stocked with our hand-dyed yarns, but they are moving fast. We will order more yarn to dye in January and hope for some decent weather for dyeing.

We are also extending our sale on mesh yarns – so easy and quick for a surprise gift; also, to help you get some holiday shopping out of the way…we are continuing our 25% off sale on all of our hand-dyed cotton, silk, and rayon CLOTHING. This is the first time we have put our clothing on sale, so take advantage and get a big slice of your holiday shopping out of the way.

We have patterns galore, in fact a full room of them, with chairs and tables. Come spend some time looking through the patterns and get inspired. Into August

Hello Fiberlovers!

How blessed we are to be up here in these lovely, and sometimes cool, mountains, while the rest of the country is sweltering. A rainy day is a knitting day, and we certainly have had our share of rainy days and nights. I hope you have not suffered any losses from the heavy rains.

We have dyed almost all of our recent yarn order, and I’m now composing a new order. I thought my passion was silk painting and dyeing, but I find I’m every bit as excited over dyeing yarns as I am about silk. It’s all about the colors…THE COLORS!

We have patterns galore, in fact a full room of them, with chairs and tables. Come spend some time looking through the patterns and get inspired. Find something new to knit; we are happy to help you find the right yarn for a new project, and perhaps you can find some hand dyed yarn that will be perfect.

We are disassembling our marbling studio. The paints are gone, but we still have some supplies, and two bath trays. If you or a friend are interested, please stop by and we will show you what is still available.

Don’t forget, our sale room is marked down to 30%…good bargains there!

And now it’s July!

Hello Fiberlovers!

And now it’s July! Where in the world did all that time go…days fly by like a blink of an eye, weeks tumble into each other, and months just somehow disappear into thin air. For me, the busier I am, the more I enjoy the moment…after all, that moment in time is all we have, so make it count.

I have begun another Hitchhiker scarf, simply because the ball of yarn I just dyed is so pretty, I couldn’t think of a better way to show it off. Do you have a lovely yarn that you bought simply for its beauty…maybe it’s time to put it into a project so you can wear that very special fiber. We would be happy to make some suggestions.

We just received our pattern book order and now have 27 new titles to peruse. What fun, going through all those books…come in, pull up a chair, and wander peacefully along the paths of these new knitting patterns.

We are excited! Our yarns-to-dye order just arrived, our counters are loaded with skeins, and we can hardly wait to dye. My color pallet this week will be 3 blues, 4 greens and 1 yellow. Oh boy, will this be fun!

We are disassembling our marbling studio. The paints are gone, but we still have some supplies, and two bath trays. If you or a friend are interested, please stop by and we will show you what is still available.

UPCOMING CLASSES: WHAT FUN!

YARN DYEING – Friday, July 5, from 9 to 12. You will learn how to prepare the yarn for dyeing, set up the dye pots, and the fun part – dyeing in solid or multi colors. Take a break while the yarns ‘set’, and then wash, soak, and hang to dry. One-day class fee is $50 plus yarn. Yarns are to be purchased at Yarns To Dye For. Call 828-697-0630 to register before July 3; registration with deposit required.

SILK PAINTING – Thursday and Friday, July 18 & 19, from 10 to 4 both days. In this class, you will learn how to control the flow of the dyes, and do fine, precise painting on silk. Two-day workshop fee of $350 includes all materials and silk, steaming, and processing. Silks can be picked up the following week, ready to wear or frame. Call 828-697-0630 to register before July 16; registration with deposit required.

Hello Fiberlovers!

Oh my! How quickly the days, weeks, and  months fly by. I feel as though I have been away for the past year and am running as fast as I can to catch up. We’ve been dyeing lots and lots of yarn, I’m dyeing silk scarves, and I am learning a new dyeing technique for silk painting. What fun! Come see the new silks I have hanging; beautiful Summer colors!

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at John C. Campbell and had a marvelous class. Everyone produced amazing silks and we had such fun doing it.

SALE FOR MAY: This month we are having a GIVE AWAY! For every purchase over $50, you may chose one yarn from the sale room – for FREE! It can’t get better than that, can it? If you are working with mesh yarns, we have a wide choice to choose from, and we are keeping them at 25% off. Don’t forget that our sale area is always a great opportunity as these yarns are 30% off. As new yarns come in, older yarns give up their space and are put in the sale yarn. You can always find interesting yarns there at a whopping 30% off. Please say that you receive our newsletter when you check out.

You should see the yarns we’ve dyed…almost 100 skeins over a three-day period, (pant, pant). They are gloriously bright and beautiful…shouting out “SUMMER IS COMING!”

20% discount on all mesh yarns.

Hello Fiberlovers!

Our DULCIMER CONCERT made for a delightful ambiance in which to do our favorite thing….knitting, although there were several of us who sang along when the old-time hymns were played. What fun!

SALE FOR JULY: We are going to continue our 20% discount on all mesh yarns, yes, our shop is “THE PLACE” to find the new mesh yarns…we have Marina, Flora, Flamenco, Poppy, and Bodega…come see the different ways we have used these interesting woven yarns. They can also be used as novelty yarns, just the way you’ve used some eyelash, you can incorporate the mesh yarn. They make for an outstanding piece of work.  You MUST mention receiving our newsletter – at check out – in order to take advantage of this sale.

Two new yarns that just arrived: (1) VITA, made from 85% recycled cotton and 15% recycled cashmere, 5 sts = 1″ US #7, approx 136 yds. This yarn is made in Italy using totally green processing. It’s good for the planet! (2) COTTON SUPREME, 100% cotton, 4-5 sts = 1″ US #7-9, approx 180 yds. The expression “soft as cotton” certainly applies to both of these yarns. Summer knitting was never so pretty. We also have reelings of some 100% cashmere from Afganistan. We will order this yarn especially for you when you want to start a project.

Our hand dyed yarns are fully stocked as we have been dyeing for two weeks. Come and enjoy all the gorgeous colors.

Other items that we make are our lovely silk scarves, many sizes and techniques, (check out the arashi shibori accordian-pleated scarves), and our fun and extremely comfortable t-shirts, dyed in the traditional Japanese shibori technique. Each one is an individual work of art. We just finished dyeing 20 more tshirts and they are available in just about every size.

The yarns I’m currently dyeing are:

Superfine Alpaca Lace weight
Mohair/wool/nylon boucle
Superfine organic merino wool
Silk/merino 50-50 blend
Merino/silk 75-25 blend
Superwash Merino, worsted, sport, and bulky
Baby alpaca/silk blend – super soft
Kid Mohair
Cashmere blends
Superwash merino chunky (NEW)
and Local yarns from Madison County

…with more to come. We also offer any of our yarns that are awaiting dyeing, if you’d like some in natural white. Want to knit a special sweater with a special color? We will dye the yarn to the color that fits your needs…have something you’d like dyed, bring it in.

Spring has sprung!

Hello Fiberlovers!

Spring has certainly ‘sprung’; the colors, it’s all about the colors for me. The azaleas were outstanding, although they didn’t last very long. I can hardly wait for the Summer flowers to give me even more inspiration for dyeing.

SALE FOR MAY (extending from April): 10% discount on all purchases that total $50 or more, but you must mention receiving our newsletter – at check out – in order to take advantage of this sale.

The YARN CRAWL (sponsored by Friends of Fibers), is May 12 and we are participating again this year. We hope to see you.

WE JUST RECEIVED OUR NEXT SHIPMENT OF MARINA IN SIX COLORS – YESTERDAY! Our shop is “THE PLACE” to find the new mesh yarns…we now have Marina, Flora, Flamenco, Poppy, and Bodega…come see the different ways we have used these interesting woven yarns. They can also be used as novelty yarns, just the way you’ve used some eyelash, you can incorporate the mesh yarn. Makes for an outstanding piece of work.

We have a new yarn to dye; it’s name is PLEASURE and it is a blend of 75% merino wool and 25% silk, Sport Weight. The skein is 330 yds, and I will be dyeing two skeins together so you have an option for 660 yds in the same color/dyelot. I “might” even dye three together so you can have 990 in the same color/dyelot. This a lovely, soft yarn with strength.

Other items that we make are our lovely silk scarves, many sizes and techniques, (check out the arashi shibori accordian-pleated scarves), and our fun and extremely comfortable t-shirts, dyed in the traditional Japanese shibori technique. Each one is an individual work of art.
