September Yarn and Dye Newsletter

Hello Fiberlovers!

Since the weather has been so cooperative, we have been dyeing yarn and silk on a very productive pace. It’s a wonderful day for me when I can be immersed with colors and dyes. And from the look of my hands, immersed is the right word.

We have widened our inventory and variety of needles. We now have Cubic’s, the square needles, that I am loving, and our next order will have the new Addi Rockets with the new sharper points.

I’ve decided to have a class on vat dye discharge printing. The dates are Sept. 17, 18, 19 all day. The first day is burning your designs and dyeing your silk. Second day we will steam the dyed silks and prepare the discharge and dyes. Third day we will print and steam. You will need a respirator, and wood-burning tools. If you do not have silk, I have silk available at wholesale prices. I supply everything else. Fee is $300 for the three days with a $50 deposit when you register. This is a very limited class so let me know as soon as possible if you are interested. LOTS OF FUN!

FYI: Peg is available for repairs and finishing your knitting, ($15 per hour). She is also available for teaching knitting and crochet, ($35 for two hours). Just call and make an appointment. She also is a whiz with sock knitting, so if you’ve always wanted to knit socks, but are a little bit intimidated, she will help you through the process. Just call and make an appointment.

You will now find vintage Japanese fabrics that can be purchased in amounts from very small to full kimono lengths. In addition, we have kimono and obi that can be purchased whole. These garments are high quality and in excellent condition. If you have an interest in Japanese kimono and obi fabrics, we just might have what you are looking for.

Don’t forget, our sale room is marked down to 30% ALWAYS…good bargains there!

See below for class times and dates.

August Newsletter

Hello Fiberlovers!

What a lovely Summer we are having. I must say, we are very fortunate in this area, as we have not had the storms and bad weather that has whirled around us, both North and South. The sky is “Carolina blue” and that is one of the dyes on my range, waiting for more yarn dyeing. Our yarn dying has been wonderful, the weather cooperated so that we could work comfortably, (if you can call 200 degree dyeing and a hot flash comfortable), but the colors are divine, bright and oh so pretty.

Personally, I’m looking forward to doing more vat dye discharge printing; I’m considering having a 3 day class in this technique, possibly in Sept., so if you are interested, stop in and let’s talk about it. I also have all the supplies for a new technique of silk dyeing that I have yet to try. I’m always excited to learn a new way to put color into silk and yarn.

In the last week I’ve had five ‘new artists’ learning how to paint on silk…two adults and two 10 yr olds. It’s been a marvelous week and the work turned out was fabulous. It gives me so much pleasure to teach this technique to those who have never done it, and help them to find a new love in their creative life. Silk painting can change your perception; once you do it, you will never see things the same again.

FYI: Peg is available for repairs on heirloom pieces, and finishing your knitting, ($15 per hour). She is also available for teaching knitting and crochet, ($35 for two hours). Just call and make an appointment. She also is a whiz with sock knitting, so if you’ve always wanted to knit socks, but are a little bit intimidated, she will help you through the process. and Local yarns from Henderson and Madison Counties

…with more to come. We also offer any of our yarns that are awaiting dyeing, if you’d like some in natural white. Want to knit a special sweater with a special color? We have ready-to-dye sock yarn from Plymouth (Happy Feet) that can be knitted and then dyed to your liking.

July Newsletter, Sumer is here!

Hello Fiberlovers!

Ahh, Summer! What a relief from the cold of Winter. So, what’s on your needles these days? Are you knitting for holiday gifts? Practicing a new pattern? Whatever you are working on, why not come and join us for social knitting. We gather every Tues and Sat from 10 til 2, and we have a chair for you. If you are allergic to a whole lot of laughing, you might want to skip it…!

Our Malabrigo Rio has arrived and is already selling well. The colors are beautiful in multi as well as solids. Rio is a worsted weight merino superwash.

We are going into our yarn dyeing mode for the month of July. See us in the class part of this newletter. Our sockyarn is the first to need more inventory, so we have 19 skeins to dye this week, and will have many more before we use up the dyes.

For the past few weeks, we have been hand printing silk, (vat dye discharge), our efforts really were rewarded. We are combining 2+ techniques and the results are so pretty. Don’t forget to look for them when you visit.

FYI: Peg is available for repairs on heirloom pieces, and finishing your knitting, ($15 per hour). She is also available for teaching knitting and crochet, ($35 for two hours). June Newsletter

Hello Fiberlovers!

What lovely cool/hot weather we are having; perfect for knitting. I hope most of you were able to do the Yarn Crawl earlier in May. It was quite good; there were a lot of people visiting “Mom” on Mothers Day, so we had a good amount of traffic. Our most-sold yarns were, surprise, our own hand dyed yarns. Certainly made us happy to have such appreciation for our hard work and beautiful colors. BTW, we are morphing into yet another dyeing technique, and we are delighted with the results. Come in to see for yourself.

We have Berroco’s newest catalog of patterns and are getting ready to order. If you are in the neighborhood, stop in and take a look at this catalog. We will be ordering patterns before the end of this month that have been requested, so come and request what you would find interesting and fun to knit.

For your information: Peg is available for repairs on heirloom pieces, and finishing your knitting, ($15 per hour). She is also available for teaching knitting and crochet, ($35 for two hours). Just call and make an appointment. She also is a whiz with sock knitting, so if you’ve always wanted to knit socks, but are a little bit intimidated, she will help you through the process. Happy Spring!

Hello Fiberlovers!

Spring will be here soon….right? RIGHT?? You wouldn’t know we are already passed the solstice. Oh well, it is what it is and we have to make the most of it. Personally: I finished the Blue Kimono and delivered it to my very happy recipient. It was, without exception, the most pleasant thing I have ever knitted. The yarn was right (alpaca) and the color was lovely (sky blue), and I had Peggy at my side to help me out of a few problems, AND she did the finishing. She makes such beautiful seams in all the finishing she does. My current project is to finished the cardigan I’m knitting with Universal’s Shades. Gorgeous Colors!

Displaying photo.JPG

Our week at JC Campbell was marvelous, small class of six but they were dedicated to learning the technique of silk painting. I have a class coming up, so if you’ve ever wanted to learn the joy of color into silk, give us a call for time and date, and sign up. It will probably be the 14th or 28th.

We have received our BIG order from Cascade and these yarns are spectacular. The new yarns are jumping off the shelf, and lots of the more ‘seasoned’ ones are selling at 30% off. Our little sales corner is FULL, come see if you can find something that would be just what you need, for a price that will surprise you. Speaking of sales, our hand dyed garments (t shirts, dresses, baby socks, etc) as well as knitted garments and scarves, are all discounted at 25%. This does not apply to silk scarves.

Displaying photo.JPG

We have a table of yarns ready to be dyed, if we can just get a warm day without all this wind. I’m hoping it will be this week as “sunny and warm” are some words that the weather people are throwing about.

FYI: The Yarn Crawl will be held Thursday May 8 through Sunday May 11. At this point in time, we are 11 shops participating in this ‘crawl’ and it covers at least 5 counties, maybe more. We will have baskets of yarn for lucky raffle winners and a large prize at the end of the ‘crawl’. We will keep you informed.

We have patterns galore, in fact a full room of them, with chairs and tables. Come spend some time looking through the patterns and get inspired. Find something new to knit; we are happy to help you find the right yarn for a new project, and perhaps you can find some hand dyed yarn that will be perfect. New yarns are arriving each day…come see the latest. We also have a sweater program that can print out a sweater pattern using your measurements and desires.

You will now find vintage Japanese fabrics that can be purchased in amounts from very small to full kimono lengths. In addition, we have kimono and obi that can be purchased whole. February News Letter

Hello Fiberlovers!

SO MUCH YARN! Our first orders of the year just came in this week and we have been very busy getting them processed and on the shelf for you. We have yarns from Berroco, Universal Yarns, Plymouth, and an order from Cascade will ship next month. The colors are so exciting, and the make up of the yarns is lovely. These are the NEW yarns and you can click on the distributor links below and check them out.

Cascade: Pure Alpaca is in – the larger order will ship mid March.

Plymouth: Revel, Encore DK

Universal Yarns: more Deluxe Worsted, more Classic Shades and Classic Shades w/sequins, Classic Shades Big Time, and Uptown Worsted.

Berroco: Berroco Sox, Boboli Lace, Floret, Folio,Fuji, Kodiak, Maya, Remix, Ultra Alpaca Light, and Vintage.

Lantern Moon: Double point needles in sizes 1 2 & 3. These are the DP needles that everyone loves to use for socks. The ones we ordered are ‘Feather Light’, and would become the favorite of all DP needle lovers.

In need of more shelf space, we have STUFFED our SALE ROOM; all yarns in that space are 30% off.

You can always reach our distributors through the links we show below. Have some fun and look up a few of these new yarns, although to really see AND FEEL how interesting these yarns are, you’ll just have to come in the shop.

The kimono has half a sleeve (I’m not a fast knitter, and have to grab my knitting time as I can). I can’t say enough about the Cascade Pure Alpaca. It is heavenly in your hands and makes a lovely fabric. It has become one of my favorites. I’m knitting this garment on a needle size US5, and it would seem to me to be the perfect gauge for this Alpaca.

We will be at Campbell School, teaching silk painting the first week of March; if you are interested or know someone who is, call Campbell School at 800-365-5724 and ask if there are any openings in the class. You’ll never see things the same way after you learn silk painting…it’s magical!

We are getting quite low on our hand painted yarns, as it has been WAY TOO COLD to go out on the deck and dye yarn. The pots are all frozen and it’s too cold to even empty them. We will order yarn to dye the second week of March, after we return from Campbell. I can hardly wait to dye yarn as new combinations of colors are dancing in my head.

Have you seen our NEW TOY? Rita has brought her loom boards in for all of you who would love to weave small projects, but do not want the expense or intense time it takes to set up a big loom. A great gift for anyone – kids and adults will thoroughly enjoy this loom board. Peg wove a gorgeous bag that could be an evening bag, it’s so pretty. She will be happy to show you how to set up the board and begin weaving right away; just think of what you can do with all those tiny yarn scraps. The loom board sells for $12.

You will now find vintage Japanese fabrics that can be purchased in amounts from very small to full kimono lengths. In addition, we have kimono and obi that can be purchased whole. These garments are high quality. If you have an interest in Japanese kimono and obi fabrics, we just might have what you are looking for.

Don’t forget, our sale room is marked down to 30% ALWAYS…good bargains there!

See below for class times and dates.

The yarns we are currently dyeing are:

Happy Holidays!

Hello Fiberlovers!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! We are sending the January newsletter a little early because we are doing something we haven’t done before. We are offering a 25% discount on all hand dyed and hand painted silks! This sale is only until Dec 31, so think SILK when you are wondering where to find the right gift, at the last minute, and at the best price.

Don’t forget, all our manufactured yarns are 20% off til the end of December. It’s a good time to stock up for your Winter knitting.

The kimono is coming along nicely – back is finished and I’m working on the two front panels. I’m enjoying very much knitting with the Cascade Pure Alpaca. It is so soft and lovely, I might knit something else with it when I finish the kimono. The multi colored short kimono that I’m knitting with Universal’s Shades is also coming along well. I’m at the point where I knit the other sleeve so I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

We are well-stocked with our hand-dyed yarns, but they are moving fast. We will order more yarn to dye in January and hope for some decent weather for dyeing.

We are also extending our sale on mesh yarns – so easy and quick for a surprise gift; also, to help you get some holiday shopping out of the way…we are continuing our 25% off sale on all of our hand-dyed cotton, silk, and rayon CLOTHING. This is the first time we have put our clothing on sale, so take advantage and get a big slice of your holiday shopping out of the way.

We have patterns galore, in fact a full room of them, with chairs and tables. Come spend some time looking through the patterns and get inspired. Find something new to knit; we are happy to help you find the right yarn for a new project, and perhaps you can find some hand dyed yarn that will be perfect. Into August

Hello Fiberlovers!

How blessed we are to be up here in these lovely, and sometimes cool, mountains, while the rest of the country is sweltering. A rainy day is a knitting day, and we certainly have had our share of rainy days and nights. I hope you have not suffered any losses from the heavy rains.

We have dyed almost all of our recent yarn order, and I’m now composing a new order. I thought my passion was silk painting and dyeing, but I find I’m every bit as excited over dyeing yarns as I am about silk. It’s all about the colors…THE COLORS!

We have patterns galore, in fact a full room of them, with chairs and tables. Come spend some time looking through the patterns and get inspired. Find something new to knit; we are happy to help you find the right yarn for a new project, and perhaps you can find some hand dyed yarn that will be perfect.

We are disassembling our marbling studio. The paints are gone, but we still have some supplies, and two bath trays. If you or a friend are interested, please stop by and we will show you what is still available.

Don’t forget, our sale room is marked down to 30%…good bargains there!

And now it’s July!

Hello Fiberlovers!

And now it’s July! Where in the world did all that time go…days fly by like a blink of an eye, weeks tumble into each other, and months just somehow disappear into thin air. For me, the busier I am, the more I enjoy the moment…after all, that moment in time is all we have, so make it count.

I have begun another Hitchhiker scarf, simply because the ball of yarn I just dyed is so pretty, I couldn’t think of a better way to show it off. Do you have a lovely yarn that you bought simply for its beauty…maybe it’s time to put it into a project so you can wear that very special fiber. We would be happy to make some suggestions.

We just received our pattern book order and now have 27 new titles to peruse. What fun, going through all those books…come in, pull up a chair, and wander peacefully along the paths of these new knitting patterns.

We are excited! Our yarns-to-dye order just arrived, our counters are loaded with skeins, and we can hardly wait to dye. My color pallet this week will be 3 blues, 4 greens and 1 yellow. Oh boy, will this be fun!

We are disassembling our marbling studio. The paints are gone, but we still have some supplies, and two bath trays. If you or a friend are interested, please stop by and we will show you what is still available.

UPCOMING CLASSES: WHAT FUN!

YARN DYEING – Friday, July 5, from 9 to 12. You will learn how to prepare the yarn for dyeing, set up the dye pots, and the fun part – dyeing in solid or multi colors. Take a break while the yarns ‘set’, and then wash, soak, and hang to dry. One-day class fee is $50 plus yarn. Yarns are to be purchased at Yarns To Dye For. Call 828-697-0630 to register before July 3; registration with deposit required.

SILK PAINTING – Thursday and Friday, July 18 & 19, from 10 to 4 both days. In this class, you will learn how to control the flow of the dyes, and do fine, precise painting on silk. Two-day workshop fee of $350 includes all materials and silk, steaming, and processing. Silks can be picked up the following week, ready to wear or frame. Call 828-697-0630 to register before July 16; registration with deposit required.
